Set up two-factor authentication for webmail
Add a second layer of protection to your webmail login with an authenticator app.
Two-factor authentication (2FA) asks for a short code from your phone as well as your password. Log in to webmail for the address you want to protect (see Access your email with webmail if you need directions), then follow the steps below. 2FA is set per mailbox, so repeat this for each address.
Before you start
Install an authenticator app on your phone. Any standard app works, for example Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, or Authy. The app generates a 6-digit code that changes every 30 seconds.
Turn on 2FA
-
Find the Edit Your Settings section and open Two-Factor Authentication.
If you do not see it, contact support.
-
Select Set Up Two-Factor Authentication.
-
Open your authenticator app and scan the QR code shown.
If you cannot scan it, enter the account and key values shown on the page into the app by hand.
-
Your app now shows a 6-digit code. Enter it in the Security Code box and select Configure Two-Factor Authentication.
If the code expires before you finish, enter the next one.
2FA is now active on that mailbox. Opening webmail from your client area works as before, since your client-area login carries you through. When you sign in directly at the webmail login screen, you will enter your password and then a code from your authenticator app.
Changing or turning off 2FA
To set 2FA up again with a new configuration, select Reconfigure. This replaces the existing setup, so the old entry in your authenticator app stops producing valid codes and should be deleted. To switch 2FA off, select Remove Two-Factor Authentication.
Setting up or reconfiguring 2FA signs you out of any other webmail windows you have open.
If you lose your authenticator app
If you lose the app, or the phone it is on, open a support ticket from your client area and we will reset 2FA so you can set it up again on a new device.
